Arden Barn [ Gallery Index ]

This old barn was on our property when we bought it, but was sliding off its foundation. A local winery bought the barn from us, dissassembled it, and then re-assembled it on their property a few miles away.

It is in 2 parts: The taller, square section on the North end is circa 1820s and is of a "swing beam" construction type. The other part is newer, c1885 or so.

The "tour" starts with a full shot from the SE, then goes from the South side (facing house) around the back (East side) of the barn, then continues around to the other side. Once around on the front (West side) then we progress to the interior through the main sliding door.

This pretty much shows the barn being pushed over. Notice the line of the darker (newer) siding where it meets the older siding. Also how the wall of the older part is kicked out at the bottom. The beams in the closest corner have all broken away from each other.
E side issues

Right in the middle are huge double swing-out doors which have some boards missing. Two smaller doors are to the left. Looks like none of these have been used for decades.

Notice there is no floor over this part of the old barn. Most of this side is open all the way up to the roof.

Under the main part of the old barn. Pretty badly eaten by powder-post beetles, but still rather impressive (those trees are about 2' in diameter).

Sorry about the cars in the way, but it does give you a nice idea of the overall size (huge).

The track is not original... but it does work nicely.

Notice the openings on the far wall to the right. Those go to the newer part of the barn (detailed later on). That steel I-beam is just stored there, not part of the structure.

This is actually taken from the ground floor looking up, but I forgot to include it earlier in the tour :)

The opening is somewhat strangely sized and positioned. The first floor of the newer part actually starts above the floor level of the old part, so from here you can look into both the ground floor and the first floor of the newer section.
